Publishing your first book comes with plenty of decisions. You have the manuscript to finish, a cover to approve, and a publishing platform to choose. Then you reach the ISBN question: should you pay for your own number or use the one Amazon KDP offers for free?

For many first-time authors, the free option is perfectly reasonable. But if you want to publish under your own imprint or sell the same print edition through multiple platforms, buying your own ISBN may make more sense.

The important thing is to understand the difference before you publish. Changing your mind later can mean setting up a new edition rather than simply replacing the number.

Which ISBN option is right for you?

If you plan to sell your paperback or hardcover exclusively through Amazon KDP and are happy with the publisher details KDP provides, its free ISBN is a practical starting point. If you want your own publisher name or plan to distribute the same print edition through other services, consider buying an ISBN.

Free KDP ISBN vs. your own ISBN

An International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a 13-digit identifier used to distinguish a particular book edition and format. Retailers, libraries, and distributors use it to identify books in their systems.

A paperback and a hardcover need separate ISBNs. If you publish the same title in multiple formats, you should plan for each format individually.

Here is how the two options compare.

Authors who want more control over publisher details and distribution

Using KDP's free ISBN does not give Amazon ownership of your manuscript or copyright. It simply means KDP supplies the ISBN under its own terms, and you cannot take that number to another publishing platform.

Buying your own ISBN gives you greater control over the publisher information associated with your book. It does not, however, guarantee bookstore placement or sales. Those depend on factors such as distribution arrangements, demand, and retailer decisions.

No ISBN required

There is no need to buy an ISBN simply to make your first book look professional. If your budget is tight, the money may be better spent on editing, illustrations, or cover design.

On the other hand, if you are building a publishing business under your own imprint, buying your ISBNs from the beginning can make your publishing setup more consistent.

One important distinction: IngramSpark also offers free ISBNs in certain markets, including the United States. Those ISBNs are subject to the platform's terms and cannot simply be transferred to KDP. Check the current rules of both services before deciding how to distribute your print edition.

How much does your own ISBN cost?

ISBN prices depend on your country and its issuing agency. In the United States, Bowker is the official ISBN agency and lists the following prices for self-publishers:

Quantity

Price

Cost per ISBN

1

$125

$125

10

$295

$29.50

100

$575

$5.75

1,000

$1,500

$1.50

These prices can change, so check the Bowker website or its ISBN store before purchasing.

Buying a block can be cheaper if you expect to publish multiple books or formats. For example, three single ISBNs at $125 each would cost $375, while a block of ten at $295 would cost less. That saving only makes sense if you expect to use the extra numbers.

If you are publishing outside the United States, check your national ISBN agency first. Some countries provide ISBNs free of charge, so paying a US agency may be unnecessary or inappropriate for your situation.

What to consider before making your decision

The ISBN decision is best made before your book goes live. Once you publish a print book using KDP's free ISBN, you generally cannot replace it with your own ISBN on the same edition. Moving to your own ISBN may require creating a new edition or listing, depending on the circumstances and platform rules.

If you decide to buy your own ISBN, follow these steps:

  1. Plan your formats. A paperback, hardcover, and other distinct formats may each require a separate ISBN.

  2. Use the correct ISBN agency. In the United States, that is Bowker. Elsewhere, check the national agency responsible for ISBNs in your country.

  3. Register your publisher details carefully. Make sure your imprint and title information are accurate.

  4. Keep your details consistent. The publisher or imprint entered on KDP should match the applicable ISBN registration records.

Taking care of these details early helps prevent avoidable problems when you upload your book or expand distribution.

How PublishPro fits into your publishing process

Choosing an ISBN is only one part of getting your book ready for publication. Your manuscript still needs to be formatted correctly for each edition, and your print cover needs to match the final book dimensions.

PublishPro helps prepare manuscripts for publishing. Its browser-based platform converts Word and Google Docs manuscripts into Kindle-ready EPUB files and print-ready PDF/X-1a files. Built-in validation checks help identify issues for KDP and IngramSpark before you upload.

If you need a cover, PublishPro also offers a book cover design service with human designers, three rounds of revisions, and full rights to the finished cover retained by the author.

You can explore available options on the PublishPro pricing page or read the self-publishing roadmap for beginners to see where ISBN selection fits into the wider process.\

Make the ISBN decision before you publish

If Amazon is your only planned sales channel, KDP's free ISBN may be all you need for your first print book. If you want your own imprint or intend to distribute the same print edition through multiple platforms, buying your own ISBN offers more flexibility.

Neither option is automatically better. Choose the one that fits your budget and publishing plans, then make sure your manuscript, interior layout, and cover are ready before you upload.
